TANKS, COCKPIT SCUPPERS, EXHAUST PIPE, AND ENGINE CONTROLS

The gasoline and water tanks are both alike, or port and starboard pairs. They can be made of 16-gauge tin-lined copper or Monel metal. Their capacity is about 67 gallons each. The seams of the tanks should be both riveted and soldered with a lap of approximately 3 / 4 ". It should be noted that the inboard upper seams of both tanks are flanged upward so the body of the tank can bear against the cockpit. It is recommended that the tanks be put in place before the deck beams are laid, but it will be possible to slide them in from forward. Numbered description is as follows:

1. The filler pipes can be Wilcox, Crittenden Figure 536. Pipe size i/ 2 ", and best if set over the canvas of the deck with the upper edge of the flange rounded off. It is best if the caps of the deck plates are marked “gas” and “water” and I would suggest that the port tank be used for gasoline, for it is farthest from the stove.

2. Neck of filler pipes can be standard 1 / 2 " brass pipe threaded into a suitable flange, soldered and riveted to the top of the tank, and the top of the tank should be bent slightly to make up for the crown of the deck, so the filler pipe should screw in easily if well greased. However, getting a tight filler pipe is one of the tricky jobs of boatbuilding.

3. Swash plate. There need not be more than one diaphragm or swash plate in the tank, but it should be of about the same thickness as the tank walls, for it is also a structural member and so should be both riveted and soldered in.

4. Vent pipes. It is well to have a good size vent pipe if the tanks are filled rapidly. The ones shown are about y 8 " I.D. and made up with soldered unions. The final loop of the vents should be just outside of the cockpit coaming as shown. It will be best if the tanks are installed and all connections made before the cockpit tub is put in place.

5. Drain plugs. The tanks should both have a drain plug from their lowest part. About i/ 2 " pipe size.

6. Stop valves. Both tanks should have good main stop valves so the pipelines can be disconnected for cleaning. The valve on the gasoline line shotdd be one of the modern approved valves for gasoline. Both valves can be straight or right angle depending on the piping.

7. The tanks can rest on soft pine chocks about i/ 2 " thick.

8. Brass clips about / 8 by i/ 2 by 3" bent to clamp over flange of tank.

9. The tanks must be firmly secured on their forward sides

so they will not shift readily in a collision. Perhaps this can be done by securing an oak block to the frames with lag screws, as shown, or any other strong blocking.
